Liz Turnbull (Bachelor of Arts, BA)
I create contemporary abstract paintings in acrylic and mixed media. My most recent artworks focus on the relationship between colour, line and form. These paintings exude vibrancy while maintaining harmony. I am also interested in the relationship between light and dark, in texture and layers and the way this plays out in my environment. Be that people, architecture or landscape. My paintings build slowly, with the layering and removal of paint revealing a little more until I reach that journey's end.
My studio is a converted 50-year-old woolshed that also houses our boutique accommodation (please visit www.thewoolshed.net.nz or click the link above). Situated in the foothills of the Kaimai ranges in the Bay of Plenty, the woolshed overlooks an ever-changing vista of orchard-strewn valley, farmland and the Pacific Ocean beyond. From up here, inspiration floats on the breeze and I can create in peace and tranquillity.
I am happy to discuss commission work.
Background
I began painting 15 years ago while living in a small Bohemian town in the Czech Republic. In Cesky Krumlov, most residents are artists of some description; musicians, painters, poets and puppet makers. I, too, was inspired by the crumbling 15th century plaster buildings and cobbled streets. I continued painting while living in France for two years, only setting my brushes aside to undertake the interior design of a 5-star hotel in Ireland.
Back in New Zealand, I was struck by a new appreciation for the surreal light and vivid colours of my homeland. I maintained my painting obsession while pursuing a tourism and marketing career. Now, the marketing career is taking a back seat while I work as an artist.
While I am largely self taught, I continually involve myself in art classes and tutorials in Auckland and Tauranga. Painting is a lifetime journey that I will continue to study and explore.
Each painting is a journey.
Each journey brings self
discovery and an exploration
of the world we live in.
There are highs and lows
along the way but, in the end,
fulfilment.
